The Micro Welcomes: Veteran Beer Company
A great beer oftentimes has an even greater story behind it. Rarely is that more true than with our featured brewery. We at The Micro are proud to add Veteran Beer Company to our stellar lineup of great local breweries for Summer Untapped.
Veteran Beer Company was created with a bigger goal in mind. Founder and CEO Paul Jenkins believed passionately in a cause. A veteran himself, he was frustrated with lack of effective and meaningful action by politicians to solve the veteran unemployment and suicide crisis. He decided to take matters into his own hands. That is when a brewery was born.
Peter Jenkins, COO, brother, and former vet himself, shared some sobering statistics. “Alarmingly, veteran unemployment runs at roughly 20%, disabled veteran unemployment at 80%. So, if you were wounded while serving your country you only have a 2 in 10 chance of finding a job! Worse… 22 veterans commit suicide each day. Almost 1 an hour!”
Operating as a benefit corporation (think Ben and Jerry’s), Veteran Beer Company donates 10% of top line gross to local veteran organizations. The vision doesn’t stop there. They back up their beliefs by not only hiring veterans themselves, but working with companies that mirror their convictions with veteran hiring practices. Their coveted 50 Caliber Bullet Bottle Openers, for example, are handmade by a disabled veteran-owned company. Says Paul, “we want to be a role model for other companies, and get the word out that someone wants to and should hire that vet”. The hope is that a rise in employment will be one of the factors leading to a decrease in suicide.
This Memorial Day, we’re honored to join Veteran Brewing Company in remembering not only those who lost their life on the battle field, but those brave men and women who we’ve lost at home. We will be donating $1 from all Veteran Brewing Company beers sold during Summer Untapped to a local veteran’s charity. We hope you’ll all help us honor their memory and welcome Veteran to our lineup with an ice cold brew. Blonde bomber and Hooyah! IPA will be on tap all weekend long. (We recommend picking up a pack of their Veteran Amber lager to go with your Monday cookout, too!)
